Description
Circa 1st to 3rd Century AD Romano-Egyptian Olive-Green Glass Cotton Reel Unguentarium or Flask. Repaired (read below).
A pleasing example of this seldom seen shape of unguentarium. These small "flasks" were used to hold small quantities of perfume, incense, oil, and other fluids or powdered materials.
This piece features nice symmetry and thick walls. It measures approximately 80 mm high (3.15"), with a base diameter of 55 mm (2.16") and an upper flange diameter of approximately 42 mm (1.65"). The weight is a hefty 122.5 grams.
The glass displays variated shades of olive-green, with subtle traces of original iridescence in one small area on the base. It appears that this piece was repaired where the stem meets the base, as there's a fine line along that intersection that indicates this was once in two pieces. Along that line we observe two or three minor chips, providing further evidence that this piece has been repaired.
There are traces of accretions throughout, as shown in the photos. Interestingly, there are remnants of an ancient thread visible on the everted rim and approximately 4 mm into the stem opening (see photos).
The provenance is an 1960s Southern California collection belonging to a dealer, then to another anonymous dealer (2021) and to finally to us. It is not a United Kingdom find and is 100% guaranteed to be genuine and with clear title. A certificate of authenticity can be provided upon request.
